I've been a process development engineer for over 22 years. While at 3M
and as an independent consultant, I've worked on wide, high speed operations for commodity products and small, precision manufacturing
for magnetic, imaging, electronic, and biomedical applications.
I Like Films
Of all the web products, thin films and clients who are new to films
make up the lion's share of my consulting. Films are easy to waste through scratching, wrinkling, and winding.
Design for Manufacturing
Where possible, I like to get involved in the product development stage.
This is where knowledg of web handling and roll-to-roll processing will pay the most dividends in reducing production costs
and increasing yields.
Design for Profitability
Just as manufacturing knowledge helps in product design, knowing your corporate
profit strategy helps engineering team. I'm always amazed when management won't share critical information on costs, waste,
and sales. To make profitable improvements, you must understand the cost and benefits of all the options.
